Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) Services
Our EPD activities
- We perform EPDs and have been published in different EPD databases
- We help you understand and interpret the results of your EPDs and provide insights into how they compare with those of your competitors.
- We perform critical review of EPDs, for the following EPD programs:
- MRPI
- EPD International
What is an EPD?
Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are standardized and independently verified reports that communicate transparent, credible information about the environmental impact of a product. They follow the ISO 14025 standard for Type III Environmental Declarations and are based on a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) conducted according to ISO 14040/14044. For construction products (currently the most mature sector in regards to EPDs) , additional sector-specific standards apply such as EN 15804.
The EPD is a report that summarises the key LCA results and includes quantified environmental indicators (such as carbon footprint and resource use), methodological descriptions, and other relevant product information. Producing an EPD involves several steps and typically takes several months, depending on data availability and product complexity.
The process includes the following steps:
- Data collection: done by client with support of RDC Environment consultant
- Conducting the LCA: according to the relevant product category rules (PCR) within the selected EPD program.
- Documenting the results: in the EPD report and background report which are both sent to the third-party verifier for review
- Independent review and verification: to ensure accuracy, reliability and compliance with the requirements of the followed PCR.
- Publication: after validation by the third-party verifier, the EPD is published through an EPD programme operator in their public database.
Once published, an EPD is usually valid for five years before requiring renewal or update.
Why do you need an EPD?
EPDs provide value for companies in different ways. They help companies meet regulatory expectations, support environmental transparency, and respond to increasing customer and market demands for reliable sustainability information. They have become important tools for demonstrating environmental responsibility, supporting carbon-reduction strategies, and gaining a competitive advantage in markets where sustainability performance matters.
- Preparing for Evolving Regulations
- Regulations in the EU are moving toward mandatory product-level environmental information.
- Under the revised Construction Products Regulation, environmental indicators (starting with Global Warming Potential from EN15804+A2) must be included in the Declaration of Performance for the first product category from mid-2026.
- The Digital Product Passport (key element of the ESPR) requires a product carbon footprint, which can be delivered through an EPD. If the DPP were to be extended with additional environmental indicators, having an EPD would ensure this information is already available.
- Strengthening Market Position and Meeting Customer Expectations
- Customers and professional buyers increasingly expect transparent, verified environmental information.
- EPDs help companies stand out by demonstrating a proactive response to sustainability-driven demand.
- Having an EPD signals reliability and builds trust with sustainability-oriented clients.
- Supporting Sustainability Strategies and Credible Communication
- EPDs are based on Life Cycle Assessments, giving companies a detailed understanding of environmental impacts across the entire product lifecycle.
- These insights help identify improvement opportunities and support long-term sustainability or decarbonisation strategies.
- Because EPDs are third-party verified, they provide a credible basis for environmental communication and reduce greenwashing risk.
- Companies with CSR or climate commitments can use EPDs to demonstrate real, measurable progress.
- Enabling Access to Procurement and Certification Opportunities
- EPDs meet the requirements and increase the likelihood of success in sustainability-focused tenders.
- In building projects, EPDs enable cost-efficient credits in certification systems such as LEED and BREEAM.
Why should you choose RDC Environment to help you with your EPDs?
With more than 30 years of experience in LCA and EPD development (more than 1000 LCA / EPD done), our company is a trusted partner for organisations seeking high-quality, credible environmental product declarations.
Our team has supported clients across multiple sectors, with EPDs successfully published in leading program databases (such as EPD International, B-EPD and PEP Ecopassport) and fully aligned with ISO and EN norms. In addition to creating EPDs, we also bring extensive experience as a third-party verifier, reviewing LCAs and EPDs to ensure methodological robustness, consistency, and compliance. This combination of long-standing expertise, regulatory insight, and proven verification capabilities makes us a reliable partner for companies aiming to develop transparent, high-quality, and credible EPDs.
Choosing RDC Environment as your partner for developing EPDs means gaining more than a technical service provider: you gain a long-term ally on your journey toward a more sustainable business. We view EPDs not as an end point, but as the starting point of a meaningful, data-driven transformation. An EPD provides valuable insight, but its true power lies in how you use those results to improve the environmental performance of your products. With our broad expertise and multidisciplinary team, we support you far beyond the publication of an EPD, helping you turn verified data into strategic action, eco-design improvements, and real competitive advantage. Together, we build a pathway toward sustainability that is both credible and impactful.
Below an example of the next steps after an EPD that we can support you with:
- EPD: initial snapshot of the environmental impact of your product
- Hotspot analysis: deep-dive into the main contributors of the environmental impact and potential high-level solutions to reduce these impacts
- Eco-design: based on the hotspot analysis, potential product improvements can be discussed (e.g. adaptation of the BOM, in the manufacturing process, in the logistics chain…). New environmental results are calculated based on the selected improvements.
- Improved product: the results of the eco-design will allow you to focus on the key elements in the overall product life time to reduce its environmental impacts in the most cost- and time-efficient manner.
We not only perform product-focus projects, we can also support you with your organisational environmental impact assessments and strategies.
