LCA expertise on food and beverages
RDC Environment has extensive experience applying Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to the food and beverage sector, helping both public authorities and private companies understand environmental impacts across entire value chains and identify effective improvement strategies. We have carried out LCAs on a wide range of food and beverage products, as well as their packaging, providing insights into key hotspots such as agricultural production, processing, distribution, and end-of-life management (such as anaerobic digestion and composting).
Commissioned by Brewers of Europe, RDC Environment created LCA tool for beer brewers, which meets the requirements of the PEFCR Beer. This tool is being used by the largest brewers in Europe. For more information on this tool, please contact Pilario.
Policy-related studies
In the context of events and hospitality, we have assessed the environmental footprint of tableware used at festivals and other events where food and drinks are served, comparing single-use and reusable tableware systems (such as drinking cups, plates, and bowls). These studies help organisers and policy makers make informed decisions on reuse systems, logistics, and waste management.
RDC Environment has also supported public authorities in Belgium and France by analysing the collection and treatment of household food waste. Our studies evaluate different collection and treatment scenarios of household waste, and the results of these studies help shape national policies regarding the food waste management. Click here for the full report for this study in France (only available in French).
Beyond product-focused assessments, we have contributed to broader reflections on the societal transition toward more sustainable food systems. One study studied the environmental, social, and economic impacts of large-scale changes in food production and consumption, more specifically: protein transition, reduction of food waste and increased consumption of seasonal fruit and vegetables.
With this combined expertise, RDC Environment offers a comprehensive view of the environmental challenges and opportunities within the food and beverage sector, from production to consumption and end-of-life.
