Hygiene and Beauty
Our expertise in the hygiene and beauty sector
RDC Environment has extensive experience applying Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to hygiene and beauty products, supporting both industry and public authorities in improving environmental performance and meeting evolving policy expectations.
We contributed to the development of the Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules (PEFCR) for detergents, out team supported the members of the sector federation (AISE) in all major stages of the project: defining the reference product, PEF screening, PEF supporting studies, and drafting the PEFCR.
For the European Commission, we also assisted in the development of representative products for the PEF project, specifically for detergents. This work ensures that the modelling guidelines in the respective PEFCR accurately reflect real market conditions in the hygiene sector. This enables more meaningful comparisons, strengthens the credibility of the PEF framework, and supports future environmental policy and labelling initiatives.
Through these projects, we have built a deep understanding of the environmental challenges and opportunities in hygiene and beauty allowing us to provide robust, actionable insights for sustainable product development.
Our role in the EcoBeautyScore project
The EcoBeautyScore Association (click here for the EcoBeautyScore website, or here for Pilario who manages the platform) is a non-profit initiative created to help consumers make more sustainable choices when purchasing cosmetic and personal care products. Working with major global manufacturers, it has developed the first industry-wide, science-based framework for assessing and comparing the environmental impact of beauty products across their full life cycle. Grounded in the EU’s Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) method, the EcoBeautyScore provides a clear A-to-E rating that gives consumers transparent, comparable information to guide more responsible choices.
RDC Environment supported in developing the LCA software used by the EcoBeautyScore consortium, delivering a ready-to-use LCA model aligned with the consortium’s methodological rules. This work ensures robust, harmonised environmental calculations and contributes to consistent product ratings across the cosmetics industry.
