Electric Vehicle Rise and Its Impact on End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) Recycling – RDC Environment’s Study

The growing popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) raises a critical question: How does this trend impact the end-of-life phase of vehicles, particularly regarding end-of-life vehicle (ELV) recycling and disposal?

RDC Environment conducted a comprehensive study in collaboration with BDO-BIPE ADVISORY, commissioned by ADEME, to analyse the impact of the electrification of the car fleet on the end-of-life vehicle (ELV) sector. The findings from this study will be presented at the International Automotive Recycling Congress (IARC) 2024 in Antwerp, Belgium. Discover the full study here.

Objectives of the study

Our study aims to clarify the complexities surrounding the end-of-life vehicle (ELV) recycling process due to the increasing electric vehicle adoption.

The main objectives were to assess:

  • The expected quantity of electric and hybrid ELVs over the next 5 and 20 years.
  • The ELV treatment industry readiness levels to transition to electric vehicles.
  • The anticipated technical, organisational, and economic impacts of vehicle electrification on the industry.

Findings from the Study

Following detailed discussions with industry experts, Producer Responsibility Organizations, and public authorities across France and Europe, our report provides a thorough insight into the changing world of end-of-life vehicle management.

The shift towards electric vehicles poses unique challenges and opportunities for the end-of-life vehicle (ELV) recycling sector. The study delves into the specific requirements for handling electric and hybrid ELVs, from battery disposal to the recycling of rare materials.
